My first piece of original fiction

The Keepers of the Elements

Prologue

Maya was the darkness keeper. She was a little eccentric but always battle-ready. She could call her scythe on a split second basis and could even read
the moves of the fire element who often kept her emotions hidden. Her and the other elements of wind, water, fire and earth kept the world in balance because
they knew that if the balance of power was broken then panic would ensue.

One day the unthinkable happened, the elements were destroyed and Maya knew that she had to find the elemental keepers to reconnect the balance. She decided
to look for the wind keeper first figuring that she would be like the wind element, weak but she was wrong. Ume it transpired had heard of her reputation
as an assassin and wasn’t to sure what to think. Eventually Maya convinced her and the two went in search of the earth keeper.

Kege was the earth keeper and specialized in manipulating plants. He preferred to use them for healing purposes but he would fight if threatened. When Maya
and Ume came to him about the balance he didn’t need much persuasion. The three decided to go after the fire keeper next.

Koto was darker then the other four and would often hone his fire powers. He was the second strongest after the water keeper due to his fighting abilities.
He didn’t like to be around others much but got along fairly well with Maya but even he didn’t like to hang around her much. When She and the others came
to him to tell him what happened he was at first reluctant to help but eventually he agreed. They only needed to find Yama the water keeper and they could
restore the balance between the elements.

Maya told the others to go ahead and find her but before they could get to her disaster struck. She was killed and her soul was sent into that of an unborn
human child. The other three were on their way to tell Maya what had happened when the same fate met them as well. Maya was getting a feeling that something
was wrong and when she had gotten word that the others were dead and their soul’s were residing in human children she went on a search to find them and
restore the balance.

Chapter one: Tall Tale

The sun was peeking over the horizon on a crisp spring day. Ume had been sitting at her bedroom window for the past three hours just listening to the wind
and waiting for the sun to rise. She crossed to her mirror and swept her pale pink hair out of her china blue eyes. She was no taller than five feet but
she could move very fast if she wished to. She threw on a pair of blue jeans and a shirt along with her diamond necklace. She had had the necklace since
she could remember and there was just something that compelled her to keep it. It was the same with her other friends as well but she figured that it was
just a coincidence. Ume walked out her bedroom door and promptly fell down the stairs landing rather hard on her back side.

She walked out her front door and headed down the street to the park where she was to meet her friends for the day. It was the first day of their spring
break and they were planning to go on a major shopping spree sometime later in the week. Looking good wasn’t Ume’s biggest priority but it ranked up there
along with beating her high score in her computer game. As she turned a corner she felt another presence behind her but when she turned around she saw
no one. “Odd I could have sworn that I felt someone’s eyes on me,” she thought. She shrugged and continued walking down the street.

“What the hell, Ume was supposed to be here ten minutes ago,” said Kege leaning against a tree, a brush in her hand. Kege was a girl about the age of seventeen.
She had green hair and crystal blue eyes. She might be concerned about her looks most of the time but she will do what needs to be done regardless of how
she looks. She could be in bed and wearing nothing but a mini skirt and a tank top with a robber in the house and she will kick him where it hurts anyway...

Yama looked at her oddly and said, “Kege I don’t even know why we should wait but lets give her a little longer,” Yama was the oldest in the group being
eighteen and was supposed to be the most mature although she did have her moments. Her hair was sky blue with eyes that were just a little darker than
that. She was usually mild tempered but that was years ago and was now slightly cold at heart.

Koto on the other hand was sort of the oddball in the group. She collected dragons and had about three dozen candles in her room alone. She had a vicious
temper but not many people saw it. Her hair was a pail orange with dark brown eyes. Koto had probably seen more things than the other three put together.
That is what makes her a highly experienced fighter in more ways than one.

The three continued talking about inconsequential things for a little while longer when Ume came running up to them. “Sorry I’m late guys I was having a
bad morning.,” she said rather breathlessly.

“Sure you were. I bet you were up at the crack of dawn like you usually are,” said Kege glaring at her.

“Yeah well at least I don’t have the reputation as a preppy cheerleader Kege, unlike you,” snapped Ume glaring right back. Yama stepped in-between the two
and pushed them away before they proceeded to cause a scene.

After the two cooled down they got to talking about their plans for the week when they heard something really odd. It sounded like an unearthly song but
it was sort of like chanting at the same time. “Come to me keepers, hear my call. Fight for the love, fight for the light, for what is right. Come to me
keepers and I’ll show you the way,” The girls decided to follow the voice and saw a very unusual thing before them.

A woman who looked to be in her early twenties with gray hair down to her back tied back into a low ponytail. She had dark brown eyes, so dark that they
were almost black. She wore a simple black shirt and pants and in her hand she held a black scythe. She looked up at the four gaping girls and smiled.
“I was wondering who would answer my call,” she said.

“Um your what,” asked Yama blinking.

“My call,” repeated the woman. “Only the true keepers of the elements could have heard it,” she explained. The woman introduced herself as Maya and explained
her tale of the elements and the balance between them. The four girls didn’t know why but they knew that they could trust her.

Chapter Two: Nemesis’ Vow

It was getting to be rather late, the sun had already sank below the trees. Koto entered her bedroom with many different thoughts and emotions swirling
through her head. She always knew that there was something special about her but she attributed that to a strange gift that she had inherited from her
father’s side of the family. She spared a glance out the window and could have sworn that she heard Maya sigh just outside.

Maya stepped back from Koto’s window thinking much the same thoughts she had all day. “Just what the fuck did I get myself into,” She knew that if things
were to be the way they were meant to be then those four girls had to come into their own soon. A gust of cold wind blew across the clearing Maya was in
and she stiffened as a cold hand landed on her shoulder.

“Whose there,” she said, her voice sounded more serious.

“What’s wrong my little keeper you don’t remember your old friend,” said the voice. Maya knew who that voice belonged to but didn’t expect to hear it here.
She started to have flashbacks of her old master and two thousand years of pain and suffering.

She knocked the hand away and turned to glare at her ex-master and to her surprised a very close friend of hers, or so she thought.

“Well well well, what a surprised Nemesis I never thought I’d see you again, alive,” said Maya now glaring at the other woman. “I never thought you’d go
over to him. Then again this leads to the question of who is controlling who I suppose,” she sneered. The man gave Maya a swift backhand across the face.

“Do us all a favor Maya and shut the fuck up,” the man only known as “Master” growled.

“What has this little party turned into, a war of words,” spoke a third voice from the cover of the surrounding trees. The master and Nemesis looked around
and saw a shadowy figure standing behind the tree line. Kege stepped out from behind the trees but there was something different about her. Maybe it was
the fact that her shirt was replaced by a one piece light green suit and her pants by a dark almost forest green cloak as well as the hood currently covering
her face.

“well keeper it seems that we have been reunited huh,” Kege smirked.

“It appears so Kege,” Maya whispered. Maya took advantage of the pair’s inattentiveness to call her scythe to her. Kege stepped over next to her and the
two spared a quick glance before charging the two evil pains in the rear.

The master fell before Maya’s scythe but when she turned she saw Kege pinned and Nemesis pressing a strange gem to her heart.

“So it seems you know of your powers little one. Well let me tell you something, I will get what I want from you and your other little friends,” Without
thinking Kege kneed Nemesis in the stomach. Nemesis began to phase into the shadows but Maya being the darkness keeper pulled her back.

“Now you listen here Nemesis. You won’t get what you want from me or my friends,” Maya hissed.

Nemesis pulled out of Maya’s grip and slammed the two girls to the ground.

“Your powers will be mine Maya and your little friends would do best to just surrender there own to me now. I will also wager that they don’t even know
how much of a traitor you are, do they Maya,” With a slight pop Nemesis disappeared from the clearing.

Chapter three: Allies

A young girl flitted silently through the trees that lined the perimeter of the south side of town. The trees provided a fare amount of cover to hide in
and the girl was thankful for that. She was the same age as Maya and wore the same outfit. Her hair was a bright yellow and her eyes were black. Rianna
leapt onto the window ledge of Yama’s room and pulled out a long staff with a lightening fork. Muttering a few choice words she hoped that the other three
girls would come into their own by the morning.

As Rianna was dealing with the other three keepers Maya and Kege were finishing things up in the woods. “Hey, Maya! Do me a favor and don’t worry about
them, trust is all that matters now and if I can trust you the others will,” said Kege

“Trust, well that’s not an entirely new concept to me but the others. You only met me a few hours ago and even les than that knowing me, people always get
into fights. Anyway Kege how did you come into your own powers anyway,” Asked Maya looking at the jeweled chain around her neck that had several emeralds
in it.

“Well I’m somewhat of a night hawk and this forest is right near my house so I figured that I’d take a walk. Although the trees were a bit well, odd when
I came in here,” she added as a branch snaked it’s way around her arm. Kege just smirked at the look on Maya’s face. A short time after that Kege headed
back to her home and Maya was left to her thoughts.

“Well that was rather irksome don’t you think Reyoko,” commented Nemesis to the man formally known as “Master” Reyoko just nodded and blew up another helpless
demon with an odd sort of dark energy ball.“I swear Those girls are going to ruin everything we’ve been trying to do, or at least Maya is and the others
well they are just like annoying flies waiting to be snatched by an even more annoying frog,” said Reyoko finally controlling his temper and smirking at
the thought of what he could do to the whole group of them.

“Annoying Flies My Lord,” broke in Rianna smirking, “I could say that about the two of you.” Reyoko and nemesis rushed for her and Rianna sighed. “This
is going to be a long night and I still have to find my sister,” she thought as she prepared to fight her ex-master and mistress.

Maya was drawn out of her thoughts by a rather bright flash of lightening. “It can’t be, she died years ago,” she thought and settled in for some sleep.
Rianna saw her and smiled, “Always the non believer sis,” she said lightly poking Maya on the top of her head. Maya leapt a few inches into the air and
looked at her.

“Rianna? But how the crap, I saw him kill you,” she said flabbergasted. Rianna just looked at Maya and said, “Well if you would stop floating in mid air
and come back down to earth sis I’ll tell you.”

“Ok So let me get this straight Rianna, You faked your death to escape him and decided to be a loner until you could find me. I still don’t get it though,
He wanted the both of us so why did you leave Reyoko’s service,” Said Maya after Rianna had finished her story.

“Simple, did he ever bother you after the day I fought him and lost Maya,” Asked her sister. Maya just shook her head.

“I could really use your help Ria, I really could,” Maya said looking at her. Rianna smiled and put an arm around her long time friend and sister.

“Things have been set into motion sis, the other’s will know about their powers tomorrow morning,”

Chapter four: Dreams and Memories

Yama awoke early in the morning, not really knowing why she was awake so early. She moved over to her window and felt an odd sort of tingling travel throughout
her body. Suddenly her mind was filled with memories, long forgotten memories. She shook her head to try and clear it but it was no use.

Pain, lots of indescribable pain. That’s what filled every particle of her body, and all she saw was a tall dark shadow looming over her with a strange
black crystal that was glowing a deep dark blue. She didn’t know how but she knew that her powers had been taken and also knew that she was going to die.
Her last thought before her soul was ripped from her body was, “I hope that my decendent, whoever she is can do what I could not.”

Yama picked herself up off the floor where she had fallen and rushed out the door, not noticing the small daggar she held in her hand. She ran down the
street, not really knowing where she was running to but running none the less. She stopped for a moment to push her hair back and felt two bodies collide
with hers.

“Yama if you’re going to stop like that at least give a hand signal will you,” said Koto’s voice sounding muffled.

His eyes glinted as he followed the young girls progress from her house. He was always watching the four of those annoying keepers for signs of their powers
and all too soon that earth keeper, Kene or something like that had awakened and figured out what the hell him and his partner were up too. Oh how he would
love to strike now and rip that Yama’s throat out and watch her bleed to death but he had better things on his mind, like controlling Maya’s powers and
causing her to crack..

She was running down a long hallway. She was running from something but didn’t know what it was. She was running towards something else and knew that it
wasn’t good but she couldn’t look back for fear of the unknown. Maya awoke to a stabbing pain in her stomach and a heightened sense of awearness. She felt
her own powers strengthen and tried to suppress them but she couldn’t. She looked around and noticed that her sister was gone. Rianna had told her the
night before that she would help the girls out but it was best for her not to be seen this soon. Maya doubled over as another stabbing pain coursed through
her body. “I don’t want this, I don’t want this power,” she thought and leapt away to find the girls.

Nemesis leapt toward the spot where she knew that Reyoko was hiding and glared at him. “Listen to me. Don’t move from here. I am going to attack those three
little girls,” she explained. Reyoko just nodded. She summoned a small black crystal and crept up behind the three girls. Too soon, much too soon she knew
that someone heard her. Nemesis leapt into the air and was struck by a strong gust of wind from Ume who had seen her coming. She was tossed around like
a rag doll and hit the ground with a dull thud.

“Who are you,” asked Koto turning around and glaring down at Nemesis.

“That is none of your business little one,” growled Nemesis flicking the crystal and forcing the three to duck. Koto thrust out her hand and a massive fireball
slammed into nemesis.

“Um Koto? How the hell did you do that,” asked Yama looking at her.

“Like Ume it was instinctual. Am I correct in thinking that you had a few weird dreams last night,”

Yes but what does that have to do with anything,”

“If it is what I think it is then it has everything to do with it. They were suppressed memories Yama. That is how Koto could do that fireball thing and
I tossed that woman around like a rag doll,” explained Ume.

“As enlightening as this is, I have killing to get back to! So prepare yourselves,” exclaimed Nemesis. Suddenly a massave blast of lightening and darkness
energy was sent right towards Nemesis and she just sort of vaporized. No one noticed a smirking Reyoko phase away from the place he was hiding as they
turned to see who was there.

Maya was standing a few feet away with Kege and an odd looking girl the three hadn’t seen before.

“I guess secrecy should be dammed Maya. My name is Rianna and I have been watching you girls for a while now. I am also the one that gave you your memories
and powers back,” Explained the girl. The three girls just nodded, knowing that their questions were answered and all six wondering where things would
go from here on out.

Chapter Five: Fallen Warrior

The smells and sounds of battle wafted over her, blood dripping down her face. She knew the battle was won but a good person was lost to them. Maya shook her head to try and clear it of the look on Rianna’s face as he struck her down but it was impossible. She remembered the months before this moment.

It was early winter and a young woman stepped out of her house, staring at the deep velvet night, the snow falling around her. She held up her hand, which took on an ethereal glow, and the snow dissipated. she flipped her hair over her shoulder and tucked a glowing diamond necklace back under her cloak.
“ I was expecting that to take longer than it did you know,” The girl turned to see a dark hooded figure standing behind her.
“It really shouldn’t have considering you and your older sister are training us Maya,” said the girl looking at the figure.
“Still I think that things will play out sometime in the next two months Ume, and we want the four of you prepared,” Ume turned and headed back inside, throwing a quick smirk over her shoulder and said, “ don’t worry we will be.”

Maya headed back to the place where she had been staying, not wanting to tell anyone her secret, not even Rianna. Over the past month she had noticed her powers taking a drastic turn for the worst. She knew that she would be the one to fire the first shot and possibly be killed but her darkness was growing and there was only so much she could handle. Rianna was keeping an eye on her and trying to siphon some of her powers to lighten the load but so far it wasn’t working. Maya sorely hoped that the girls were as ready as they said they were.

Ume went over to where the others were sitting and she plunked down in a winged armchair. The other three looked at her and she glared right back.
“Ume, what’s got you so annoyed,” asked Koto staring at her friend.
“Nothing, just wondering if we are as ready as we think we are and the other two think we’re not.”
Oh don’t worry about it, we will win,” said Yama standing up and walking from the small room.

Ume said nothing, just sat staring into space. She had a bad feeling about the next time that her and the other keepers met Reyoko. She couldn’t put her finger on why but she knew that; even if the balance of elements was complete now that one or all of them would be killed. Death was something she couldn’t face, let alone think about. She yawned and stretched, throwing a quick look out the window at where only a half hour before there was a raging snow storm, but now there was only a light flurry.

Several explosions could be heard from over the hill where she was standing, her darkness flew forward quickly and suddenly, pulling her towards the raging battle. Maya’s face showed a great amount of pain because she knew this was all her fault. “If I had just told someone then I’d already be dead and none of this would have happened.. She reached the top of the hill and couldn’t believe what she saw. Her friends and sister fighting their hardest to keep Reyoko back and trying to reach each other in the process. The thing that frightened her most was that the power they were fighting against was her own. Another stabbing pain coursed through her body and she fell to her knees. As she fell she had enough time to call her staff before someone caught her. She looked up into Rianna’s fierce black eyes, “What the hell was that about Maya. I knew you couldn’t control your powers but to attack us, Why didn’t you just come out and tell me,” Said Rianna helping her to stand.
“This is an interesting turn of events,” said Reyoko stepping up behind them. “The two sisters together again.” He laughed and the two glared at him. “Oh god not now, I died before but never like this that was quiet but this,” Rianna was clearly panicking now and that thought alone was enough to make her loose concentration on what little of Maya’s power’s she was holding back and she felt something strike her on the side of the head. She fell back, a trail of blood falling from a deep gash on the side of her head. She felt Maya leap on her and pushed her off with one hand while calling her staff with the other. The two keepers faced off, crossing their staffs and glared at the other. Rianna knew that Maya wasn’t doing this willingly, she never would listen to a gerk like him.

Reyoko watched the two sister’s fight for a while and noticed that Rianna was holding back. “Of course you little prat you would always hold back where your sister was concerned,” he thought. He wanted to kill her now but there needed to be a better way to torture her than this. He let more of his darkness flow into Maya and she fell, his control broken. Rianna looked over when she saw her sister fall and a searing pain coursed through her body. Her last thought was, “I can’t believe this. Maya I’m sorry,”

Yama saw Rianna fall and ran over to her along with the other keepers. She glared at Reyoko and the four channeled their powers into one continues beam of energy which shot itself at Reyoko. Maya stood up and combined her power with theirs and the scream that left Reyoko’s mouth was oddly satisfying. The five looked over at the fallen body of their friend and knew that it was over. The balance of elements was complete and that the next adventure was about to begin.
